Today was the first of my basic cake decorating class at Michael's and I have to admit, I was kinda bored. I took the class knowing that I could learn a few techniques, but that first class was rather painful for me. When I want to learn something, I seek out the answers. I'm an avid googler and have taught myself everything I've learned up until this point. It may not be done the right way, but my techniques have worked for me thus far.
This is a cake class done by Wilton and I've already decided I'd like to take a class not associated with a particular brand or product line.
This instructor spent the first 1 hr. and 50 min. of the 2 hr. long class talking about different icing consistencies, spatulas, etc. She showed us how to properly put a coupler on an icing bag and I almost fell asleep. Now, it could have been the 7 hour trip home from Long Island or it could have been because I didn't learn one thing new tonight.
Add more confectioner's sugar to icing to make it thicker, been there done that.
Add water to make it thinner. DUH. Wait, wait, first she actually had to tell the class what confectioner's sugar was. If you don't know the difference between that and granulated sugar, I'm not sure how you ended up in a cake decorating class in the first place.
Finally at the end of class we were able to start
playing with icing decorating our cookies. The first couple of stars were horrible. The peaks were so tall and it was because the instructor decided to add too much water to my already thin (store bought) Wilton icing.
You probably can't tell in this photo.
But I bet you can in ths one. Yikes!
Okay, those stars look better.
Where were we?
Oh, right, how bored I was. And it totally pained me to decorate store bought cookies.
The left side of this cookie has regular stars and the right side are what I called meringue stars. I purposely made the peaks higher so they look like meringue drops.
Hopefully the next class I learn something new. Even if I don't, I will still have fun decorating a cake!
